The presence of the remarkable dwellings bears witness to the rich past of this seaside resort as a result of the erstwhile flourishing salt trade. The quaysides, the facades of the houses and town houses lend their charm to this quaint resort which has been awarded the label of ‘Petite Cité de Caractère de Loire-Atlantique’ in recognition of conservation of its historical and architectural heritage.
The port of Le Croisic, dates back to the XVIIth century is today the main port for the fishing of the prawns known as ‘le bouquet du Croisic’. The geographical shape of the port was fashioned by the salt trade. Indeed the boats loaded with balast would unload their cargo of stone before reloading with the precious cargo of salt known as ‘white gold’. This is how ‘Le Mont Lénigo’ and ‘Le Mont Esprit’ and the different basins of the port came to be. The town of Le Croisic is edged by the ‘trait’ the point of entry for the trawlers and other shellfish fishing vessels.
