Guérande’s Little Train
Your departure point is la Porte St Michel (main gate into the town) for your tour of the medieval town of Guérande in our Little Train. This tour will provide you with a whole new perspective on our fortified town: a view of its most beautiful side and yet most warlike like aspect: from outside the ramparts.
The trip down towards the salt marshes provides a view over the hillside of Guérande. A 15 minutes stop-off in the very heart of the ‘pays de l’or blanc’ (white gold country - salt) lends the chance to admire the beauty of the salt marshes.
The Little Train provides an undeniable opportunity to take in the amazing scenery!!
The salt marshes of Guérande
A stay in Guérande without stopping-off to visit the salt marshes would be inconceivable such is the importance of the salt trade to the town and the surrounding area!
Your guide will accompany you into the heart of the ‘Site Naturel Protégé’ (natural conservation area) and explain everything you need to know about the workings of the salt marshes, the production and harvesting technics used for salt.
Depending on the season you will be able to discover the native flora of the salt marshes : saliconia..and observe various species of bird present in the area Brent geese , (tadorn) shelducks, egrets…
The Regional Natural Park of La Brière
Guérande is located between ‘le Pays Blanc’ literally the ‘white country’, the land of the salt trade and ‘le Pays Noir’, the black country, the marshlands of La Brière. The Regional Natural Park of La Brière a unique site to visit with groups whether it be for a day’s outing or a longer stay.
Not to be missed is opportunity to visit the most intimate and mysterious areas of the La Briere best accessible by using A TRADITIONAL FLAT-BOTTOMED BOAT known as le CHALAND. Not only will your guide tell you all there is to know about the history of the place but will also help you discover the wonders of the local fauna and flora of this marshland.
Setting out along the little channels of the marsh is a moment guaranteed to fill you with wonder!
Come and discover in the very heart of the Park of La Brière the history of the village of thatched cottages totally restored since the creation of the park back in 1970. The traditional Brièron village of Kerhinet consists of eighteen cottages which bear perfect witness to the architecture of La Brière. Once again your guide will reveal the lives and customs of the local people as you visit the wash house and the communal bread oven.
Make the most of your stay by stopping off for lunch in one of La Brière’s famous inns.
Come and discover the Château de Careil
All there is to know about the history of this major seat of Protestantism dating back to the XVIth century will be revealed to you by its current owner through his passion and enthusiasm for his residence.
